Hello everyone! I’m Iván, and I’m excited to share my final report for the WP Credits course. This report summarizes my contributions to Polyglots, the challenges I faced, and the skills I gained. I hope my experience inspires others to contribute to open-source projects!
I contributed to the WordPress Polyglots Team. My focus was on improving the accessibility of the various plugins to make it more accesible to spanish speakers.
I learned by reading the Poliglots Handbook . My mentor, Celi Garoe, guided me through the process of setting up a local development environment and submitting my first patch.
One challenge was understanding the how to translate everything. I resolved this by asking my mentors and a few colleges. Another issue was that my translations must be reviewed by an editor which may not be online at the moment to lend help.
Here are my main contributions:
Paid Membership Subscriptions – Effortless Memberships, Recurring Payments & Content Restriction
The WP Credits course taught me the value of open-source collaboration. I learned how to:
- Use Git and GitHub for version control and team workflows.
- Write clear, concise documentation for developers and users.
- Communicate effectively in global, remote teams.
- I also made great connections in the WordPress community, which has been incredibly supportive!
Through this project, I gained:
- Technical: Advanced JavaScript (React, JSX), PHP, accessibility testing tools like axe-core and experience with translations using polyglots.
- Soft Skills: Asynchronous communication, time management, and giving/receiving constructive feedback.
Contributing to WordPress has been a rewarding experience. I was surprised by how welcoming the community is to beginners! Moving forward, I plan to develop my own interest with the knowledge i gained from this experience
